Colds & Flu
By Ellen J. Kamhi, Ph. D. with Dorie Greenblatt
Almost EVERYONE has experienced a cold or flu at some point in his/her life! Our high tech medical system still has little help to offer except for drugs that might suppress the all too familiar symptoms - runny nose, congestion, sore throats and fatigue. These drugs, however, often have side effects such as drowsiness, or could lead to more serious complications.
Colds and flu are ancient afflictions that our ancestors suffered from since the beginning of time. Perhaps that’s why so many plants have been used throughout history to help alleviate cold and flu symptoms, often with much more effective results than modern medicine, and without the unwanted side effects.
Herbal treatments for colds and flu focus on many different aspects of this common health challenge. These include preventing infection, increasing immune system function (the body’s natural defense), relieving congestion and coughs, soothing a sore throat, reducing a fever and quieting an upset stomach.
Single Herbs & Nutrients
There are many herbs you’ll want to have in your Natural Medicine Chest that have been scientifically proven to fortify the immune system. It’s best to start taking them immediately if you are under extra stress, exposed to a chill or surrounded by others with a cold or flu. Most well known of the immune stimulants is Echinacea, which increases the motility of white blood cells, the body’s soldiers of the immune system. Nature’s Answer® offers many Echinacea liquid herbal extract formulas (alcohol-free, organic alcohol)to choose from including two flavored formulas – one with orange and one with grape. Another ideal herb for immune support is featured in Nature’s Answer®’s Goldenseal (alcohol-free) formula. Goldenseal contains the active ingredient Berberine, which has been shown to have antibacterial properties. Additional herbs containing Berberine include Oregon Grape Root and Barberry. Nature’s Answer® offers each of these herbs in a liquid supplement (organic alcohol) form.
Mushrooms and more specifically, Maitake mushrooms, are well-recognized for their immune-enhancing benefits. Maitake Bio-Beta-Glucan™ (alcohol-free) from Nature’s Answer® features the finest quality of organic Maitake mushrooms. These mushrooms contain a high presence of beta-glucans, the mushroom’s active ingredient. Maitake Bio-Beta-Glucan™ is an ideal choice for immune enhancement, providing the extra protection the body needs during and throughout these “peak seasons”.
Nature’s Answer®’s Bio-Flavonoids with Rosehip (organic alcohol) is a tasty liquid extract that provides the body with the extra nutrients it needs to ward off colds and flu. The formula’s effectiveness can be attributed to the bio-flavonoids, which have the ability to boost the activity of Vitamin C.
Synergistic Blends
Combination formulas such as Immune Boost™ (alcohol-free) and Resist™ (alcohol-free) feature synergistic blends of herbs well-known for their roles in boosting the immune system. (Synergistic means that the herbs work more effectively when blended together than if taken individually). Immune Boost™ from Nature’s Answer® features Echinacea and Maitake mushroom with other immune-enhancing herbs. Resist™ and Echinacea/Goldenseal (alcohol-free, organic alcohol) also feature unique herbal combinations designed to provide optimum health benefits.
Targeted Support
If you DO find yourself developing sneezing attacks and a scratchy throat, it’s still not too late to look to herbal remedies for their medicinal support. Immediately start on any of the herbal formulas mentioned above. However, you can further strengthen their effectiveness with additional herbs that target specific symptoms. For congestion and coughs, try Nature’s Answer®’s Fenugreek (organic alcohol), Elderberry (alcohol-free) or Broncitone™ (alcohol-free). Broncitone™ is an outstanding formula featuring a blend of Elecampane and Mullein with additional herbs that support respiratory function. Gargle with a combination of Thyme, Goldenseal and Garlic liquid extracts in warm water, along with a pinch of salt. For fever, try Nature’s Answer®’s Yarrow Flower (organic alcohol) and Feverfew (alcohol-free) liquid extracts. These help to “break a sweat”, thereby balancing the body and reducing fever. If a queasy stomach accompanies your symptoms, Nature’s Answer®’s Bitters with Ginger (alcohol-free) can really bring relief. It contains Ginger and Cardamom, which are considered “warming” herbs to help offset “cold” or “flu-like” symptoms.
The best way to fight off a cold or flu is to avoid infection in the first place. Frequent hand washing and diligent cleaning of common “vector” surfaces such as telephones and computer keyboards (which many people touch) can really help. It’s also a good idea to take extra time for yourself to reduce stress. Enhance relaxation further with a warm cup of tea along with Nature’s Answer®’s Tense-Ease (alcohol-free), Garlic (organic alcohol), Ginger (organic alcohol) or the herbal sweetener Stevia (alcohol-free).
Of course, Grandma was right when she said get plenty of rest and drink a lot of liquids, along with your herbal remedies. You’ll be back in the swing of things in no time!
