What is White Willow?

Many people are able to identify a willow tree, with its long branches that float with the wind. It is often thought of as a symbol of flexibility, which is interesting since it is often used to help maintain healthy joints* which supports flexibility*. Willow trees are native to many parts of the world, including North America, Europe and Asia. There are many varieties of willow, including the distinctive weeping willow (Salix babylonica), white willow/European willow (Salix alba), and  black willow/pussy willow (Salix nigra).

What is White Willow used for?

The use by humans of willow for helping to support joint comfort* may reach back into prehistoric times. In the book, Clan of the Cavebears, the protagonist was a medicine woman who often used White Willow Bark Tea to help maintain healthy joints* of the warriors she cared for. During the time of Hippocrates(400 BC), people were advised to chew on strips of the willow tree bark, or make it into a strong tea. The bark contains many compounds, including salicin, which is a naturally occurring chemical constituent that was used to develop aspirin.
